Binance survived the largest crypto hack on record — and still lost ground. In the seven days after the October 29 theft of about $6.3 billion from its hot wallets, Binance's share of spot trading on the market's top-10 platforms fell to about 42%, down from around 48% before the hack and roughly 51% in mid-August, according to Kaiko data reported on November 4. Rivals moved the other way: OKX, Coinbase and Kraken all increased their share in the same week. The hack did not break Binance, but it did redistribute trading — and that redistribution is the story traders should watch next.Binance trading share and flows after the hack

The numbers are precise enough to matter. OKX's market share rose to about 14% in the past seven days, up from about 11% the prior week, while Coinbase grew to 9.6% from about 9%. Binance itself says the picture is already stabilising: as of Monday it held $157 billion in assets, citing internal estimates that factor in the hack, subsequent withdrawals and price moves, and by around 3:00 UTC on November 3 hourly deposits began exceeding hourly withdrawals, reflecting improving activity and a normalisation of flows. In other words, the outflow wave appears to have crested — but the market share given up during it has not automatically come back.

Why traders moved — and why some may stay moved

A hack of this size moves traders for two reasons, and they work on different clocks. The first is mechanical: Binance suspended withdrawals after the theft, so traders who needed to trade simply went elsewhere for a week. The second is reputational, and it lasts longer: the US Federal Bureau of Investigation has attributed the theft to North Korean hackers — a charge Pyongyang denies — and Binance co-CEO Richard Teng described it as a months-long campaign, not a single mistake or breach. Traders who rebuilt their routines on OKX or Coinbase during the freeze may not bother moving back, especially if fees, liquidity and product depth are close enough.

That is also why the rival gains deserve a closer look rather than a celebration. Kraken, one of the share gainers, has itself restricted accounts linked to a suspected theft of more than $133 million from an unidentified European Union entity, and is working with law enforcement on recovery. Blockchain investigator ZachXBT identified a further $27 million in withdrawals from centralised exchanges, taking the suspected losses in that separate incident above the $106 million first reported, with Bitquery reporting that $62.98 million in stablecoins was converted into 27,553 Ether within roughly four hours. No exchange is immune to being a conduit in a theft — the question is always how fast it freezes, discloses and cooperates.

What to watch next

Three things decide whether Binance's 42% is a dip or a new level. First, whether deposits keep outrunning withdrawals through the rest of this week — the November 3 crossover is one data point, not a trend. Second, whether OKX holds its 14% once Binance's full product range and withdrawal speeds are normal again, or whether traders drift back. Third, what investigators and the frozen-funds trail reveal about the hack itself: around $2.9 billion of the stolen funds have already been frozen by stablecoin issuers such as Tether and Circle, and Binance says it has replaced about 95% of affected assets from company resources.
