Gold reclaimed $4,000 — then pushed past $4,100. It rose 3.63% from Tuesday's close of $3,921.34 to $4,063.84, its first close above $4,000 since October 29, after a low of $3,914.40 and a high of $4,070.43. Friday's close had been $3,875.18, so the round trip — below $4,000, then back above it in a single session — is a sharp reversal. By the Asian session on November 5, gold had extended the rally past the $4,100 mark hitting a two-week top, on the back of the previous day's gain of more than 3.5%, its biggest daily gain since mid-August. Some desks now talk about $4,200–$4,250 above $4,000, with silver eyeing $54–$55.

The dollar woke up on November 5 at a one-month low, and EUR/USD is knocking on the door of 1.1300. The US Dollar Index fell about 0.6% toward 101.27 after the midterm results, trading below 101.50, as the US 10-year yield dropped about 5 basis points toward 4.917% and the 2-year yield fell about 3 basis points to 4.602%. EUR/USD closed 0.32% higher at 1.12287, after reaching 1.12731 during the session and trading above 1.1269 — the upper line of one widely watched weekly range — in the midday hours, before closing back below it. The breakout has not fired yet. But the direction of travel is clear, and today brings the catalyst that could settle it: the Bank of England decides at 12:00 UTC.

The midterm result is the thread running through every market this morning. Democrats won control of both houses of Congress, and the dollar closed lower against all seven majors on one feed, from 0.17% against the yen to 0.63% against the New Zealand dollar. Analysts at MUFG noted that the scale of the Democratic win has not been matched by the scale of market moves so far — the dollar and Treasury yields are only modestly softer. That restraint is itself information: traders are waiting for the next hard data before committing, and the next hard data arrives fast.

Why gold matters for forex traders

For forex traders, gold matters twice over. First, it is the mirror of dollar weakness: when the dollar falls and yields soften, gold usually rises, and this week it has done so emphatically. Second, it is a risk signal. A gold rally alongside rising equities is a hedging bid, not a panic bid — traders are protecting gains, not fleeing markets. That distinction matters for EUR/USD, because a panic bid would favour the dollar, while a hedging bid lets the euro drift higher.

The levels that matter: EUR/USD, GBP/USD and the Bank of England

EUR/USD's technical picture is a study in near-misses. The pair reached 1.12731, traded above the 1.1269 line in the 12:00 and 13:00 UTC hours, but closed below it — so the breakout signal has not fired. One morning briefing puts the path plainly: EUR/USD is headed towards 1.1300, before a reversal is possible from there. Support levels cited for the day include 1.1260, 1.1225, 1.1206, 1.1178 and 1.1150, with a sustained move above 1.1277 strengthening the recovery toward 1.1314. The eurozone backdrop is mixed: October composite PMI slipped to 51.7 from 53.1, services eased to 51.4, and the latest ECB reference rate reached 1.1267 on November 4. Growth is still expanding, but more slowly — which is why the euro's rally owes more to dollar weakness than to European strength.

Sterling is the day's live wire. GBP/USD recently reached approximately 1.3495, its highest level in seven weeks, and the Bank of England is widely expected to raise its main rate by 25 basis points to 4.00% from 3.75% at today's meeting, with Governor Bailey speaking at 12:30 UTC. Markets have largely priced in the hike, so the statement and the vote split matter more than the decision itself: a hawkish surprise extends sterling's recovery, a dovish tilt invites profit-taking. Beyond today, traders are already looking to Friday's US employment report — the Nonfarm Payrolls release, with forecasts around 63,000 new jobs and unemployment at 4.2% — while futures markets still price more than an 80% chance of a December rate rise. Gold above $4,100

FAQ

Why is gold above $4,000 again?  Gold rose 3.63% to $4,063.84, its first close above $4,000 since October 29, then pushed past $4,100 in Asian trading on November 5, on dollar weakness and softer yields.

Why is the dollar falling? The midterm results removed a source of uncertainty and lowered expectations of renewed military strikes, while softer Treasury yields reduced the dollar's yield support. The Dollar Index fell toward 101.27, a one-month low.

What happened to EUR/USD? It closed 0.32% higher at 1.12287, reached 1.12731 intraday, but closed below the 1.1269 breakout line — so the move toward 1.1300 is in progress, not confirmed.

What does the Bank of England decide today? A 25-basis-point rise to 4.00% from 3.75% is widely expected at 12:00 UTC, with Governor Bailey speaking at 12:30 UTC. The statement and vote split matter more than the hike itself.

What comes next for forex traders? Friday's US Nonfarm Payrolls report (forecast ~63,000 jobs, unemployment 4.2%) is the next major catalyst after today's Bank of England decision.
