Morpho Blue Gains 4.31% as DeFi TVL Slips to $80.9 Billion — Why Retained Deposits Beat Rented TVL
Total DeFi value locked slipped 0.72% this week to $80.9 billion — but Morpho Blue grew 4.31% against the trend, underlining a split between protocols that rent deposits with incentives and protocols that keep them through distribution.
DeFi TVL stood at $80.9 billion as of November 6 at 13:01 UTC, with seven of the twelve leading chains posting weekly declines. Morpho Blue and SparkLend were the exceptions among major lending protocols. Follow DeFi coverage on the Zimbuck News page and debate the numbers in the Zimbuck Market News group.

The week in DeFi numbers
- Total DeFi TVL: $80.9 billion, down 0.72% on the week
- Ethereum: $43.27 billion — about 53.49% of all DeFi TVL
- Morpho Blue: $10.97 billion, up 4.31% on the week
- SparkLend: up 2.05% on the week
- Largest protocol overall: Lido at $21.83 billion
- Biggest categories: Liquid Staking $51.03 billion, Lending $49.84 billion, DEXes $12.62 billion
The full weekly breakdown is published in the TokenPost DeFi TVL report for November 6. A falling total with a rising Morpho is not a contradiction: in a risk-off week, capital consolidates into protocols users already reach through apps they trust, and leaves experimental venues first.
Retained TVL versus rented TVL
Research published this month comparing four DeFi launches on DefiLlama data makes the mechanism plain. Morpho grew through partner distribution — integrations into Coinbase, Crypto.com and other platforms — to a record of about $11.4 billion in 2026, with a deepest drawdown of only about 35% along the way. By contrast, Plasma raised $1 billion in pre-deposits in 30 minutes, peaked near $6.4 billion in October 2025, and had fallen about 92% to roughly $0.5 billion by November 2026. Blast's bridge TVL fell about 99.8% from its $2.9 billion June 2024 peak to about $6 million, and the network announced its shutdown in October 2026.
The lesson is structural, not personal. Deposits that arrive for points, pre-deposit bonuses or airdrop expectations leave when the incentive ends — the TVL was rented. Deposits that arrive because a lending market is embedded inside a wallet or exchange a user already opens every day behave like ordinary savings balances: slower to arrive, far slower to leave. Morpho's model — supplying lending infrastructure that big consumer platforms distribute under their own brands — is currently the clearest working example of the second kind.

What this means for DeFi users
First, read TVL changes with the price effect stripped out: because TVL is a dollar figure, a falling Ether price shrinks it even when token deposits are stable. Second, treat a protocol's distribution — which wallets and exchanges route users to it — as a durability signal alongside audits and track record. Third, be sceptical of launch-week TVL records built on pre-deposits; the retention curve over the following six months is the number that matters. FAQ
What is TVL? Total value locked is the dollar value of tokens deposited in a protocol's smart contracts at a given moment. It measures deposits, not profit or safety.
Why did total DeFi TVL fall while Morpho Blue rose? Market-wide price falls and withdrawals hit most chains, while capital consolidated into a few distributed lending protocols. TVL can move in opposite directions at market and protocol level in the same week.
What is Morpho Blue? A lending protocol that lets others build customised lending markets on its base layer. Its growth has come largely through integrations with large consumer platforms rather than its own incentive campaigns.
Does high TVL mean a protocol is safe? No. TVL shows how much capital is deposited, not how secure the contracts are. Audits, bug bounties, time in production and incident history are separate checks.
