European crypto users holding stablecoins on Coinbase have two days left to act. On October 30, 2026, Coinbase will automatically convert remaining European Economic Area retail balances in 14 tokens that have not received authorisation under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, or MiCA. Trading and purchases of the affected tokens for EEA retail customers are already paused. If you hold any of them on Coinbase and you live in the EEA, what happens next depends on a choice you make before the deadline — and on understanding exactly what conversion means.Which tokens are affected, and what happens to them

The 14 tokens are USDT, PYUSD, USD1, DAI, PAX, GUSD, GYEN, BUST, UST, RAI, PAXG, MUSD, USDS and TGBP. On or after October 30, any remaining EEA retail balance in these tokens will be converted at market prices into USDC, another supported crypto asset, or fiat currency. Coinbase has said the conversion happens automatically — no manual swap is required — but it is also a one-way door: deposits of the listed tokens made after October 30 will not be credited or converted, and recovery is not guaranteed. In practice, that means an EEA user who does nothing keeps value, but loses the choice of asset. Tether's USDT, the largest of the group, traded at $0.9988 on October 28, and its global circulating supply is roughly 2.5 times USDC's — so this is not a small cleanup of obscure tokens, it is a forced migration of one of crypto's most-used assets inside Europe's regulated perimeter. Why October 30, and why now

MiCA's transition period for stablecoin issuers ended on July 1, 2026, without an extension, and the European Securities and Markets Authority issued guidance on October 8 that tightened the timetable for platforms. Coinbase's October 30 date is the point at which its EEA retail service stops carrying tokens that lack the required authorisation. The same regulatory wave is reshaping the stablecoin map in other ways: the European Banking Authority classified USDC on October 14 as the first significant e-money token among 45 notified under MiCA, and from November 12 the EBA will directly oversee Circle's European issuer — its own funds, reserve assets, liquidity rules, and recovery and redemption plans. The significant-token framework also imposes a 60% minimum share of bank deposits, double the 30% required of other e-money tokens, and Circle has asked the European Commission to replace that fixed share with a broader asset-liquidity standard. USDC already accounts for 56% of euro stablecoin trading volume, up from 10% in January 2024 — a shift driven by exactly these exchange restrictions. First, check whether you hold any of the 14 tokens on Coinbase as an EEA retail customer — the restriction applies to Coinbase's service for European users, not to every platform or jurisdiction, and traders outside the EEA are unaffected. Second, if you want to keep a specific asset, withdraw it to a supported external wallet before October 30; that is the only way to avoid automatic conversion. Third, be careful with GYEN in particular: its issuer, GMO-Z.com Trust, is discontinuing the token, and Coinbase already disabled GYEN transfers on October 26, with conversions running October 26–30. Fourth, remember what MiCA does not touch: it reaches licensed intermediaries, not decentralised protocols, so USDT's usage in DeFi is largely unaffected by this conversion. The deadline is about one platform's regulated European service, not about the tokens ceasing to exist. Yes, if you withdraw it to a supported external wallet before the deadline. After October 30, deposits of the listed tokens will not be credited, and recovery is not guaranteed. Does this affect users outside Europe? No. The restriction applies to Coinbase's EEA retail service. Traders outside the EEA are unaffected, and DeFi usage is largely untouched.
