Tokenized stocks have quietly grown from a curiosity into a $4.63 billion market in under a year. According to Token Terminal data as of October 28, 2026, onchain equities now carry a combined market capitalisation of $4.63 billion — almost exactly where stablecoins stood in March 2020. Stablecoins have since grown roughly 64-fold to about $297 billion. Nobody can promise tokenized stocks will follow that path, but the comparison sets the stakes: this market is now being measured against one of crypto's greatest growth stories, and it got here in ten months.

### From under $1 billion to $4.63 billion in ten months

A tokenized stock is a blockchain token built to track the price of a share or fund — a digital receipt for equity exposure that can move around the clock on crypto rails instead of waiting for a brokerage to open on Monday morning. The sector began 2026 with a market cap under $1 billion — about $654 million in the week of January 5, according to DWF Labs. It cleared $3 billion by early September, reached about $3.8 billion in the week of October 5, and now stands at $4.63 billion. DWF Labs' earlier figure put growth from January at 483%. Trading has kept pace: monthly onchain volume reached a record $15.6 billion in September 2026, and $14.4 billion traded onchain outside the US over a recent 30-day window — 99.3% of it tokenized stocks. ### Three issuers, one chain, and a retail crowd

The growth is strikingly concentrated. Three issuers hold about 81% of the market: Binance's bStocks, Ondo Global Markets, and Backed Finance's xStocks. On the infrastructure side, BNB Chain holds the largest share of tokenized stock value — estimates range from 30% to 47% depending on the snapshot, with about 37.5% to 42.59% in mid-October — ahead of Ethereum and Solana. The underlying assets are mixed, but exchange-traded funds make up the largest slice, with tokenized ETF value ranging between $700 million and $1.1 billion, and individual leaderboard names include Circle (CRCL), MicroStrategy (MSTR) and SpaceX (SPCX).

The investor base is just as distinctive. Holder counts have passed 4 million, and the average position for individual investors is around $780. A market built on sub-$1,000 positions is retail-driven, not something institutions are quietly building in the background. Much of the trading happens outside US borders and outside regular market hours — the precise gap blockchains fill, since traditional exchanges close and blockchains do not. That also explains why this market's centre of gravity sits outside the US, and why its growth says as much about access — investors who could not easily buy US shares now can, in token form — as it does about speculation.

### The gap between owning tokens and using them

Here is the number that tempers the celebration. Only about 6.8% of tokenized stocks are actually being put to work in DeFi, according to one snapshot of a $4.4 billion market spread over 13,411 stocks from 36 issuers on 18 chains. Deposits of tokenized stocks in DeFi lending markets are a small fraction of issuance — and the race for that collateral is becoming a contest between distribution models: Solana brings crypto-native liquidity, Robinhood Chain brings a retail brokerage base, BNB Chain leans on Binance's exchange users, and Base brings Coinbase. The use case brokerages cannot offer is real — borrow against an NVDA token on a Sunday, or provide liquidity with a TSLA token while Wall Street is closed — but for now only a small slice of the market is doing it. If utilization climbs even modestly, DeFi deposits could grow faster than issuance itself.

That gap connects directly to this week's other tokenization story: 33 companies formally objected to having their shares tokenized on the OKX-ICE venue, as covered in our earlier piece at https://zimbuck.com/blogs/320/33-Companies-Just-Said-No-to-Tokenized-Stocks-and-Wall. Issuance is booming while issuer consent is contested and DeFi usage is thin. Those three facts can all be true at once, and together they describe a market that has proven demand for tokenized exposure without yet proving the full stack — consent, custody, and composability — that would make it a replacement for traditional equity markets rather than a parallel one.

### What the stablecoin comparison really implies

The March 2020 comparison is useful precisely because it is not a prediction. Stablecoins grew 64-fold because they solved a problem every crypto trader had — moving dollars between venues without touching a bank — and because their infrastructure kept working through crashes. Tokenized stocks have not yet faced their equivalent stress test at scale: a contested corporate action, a major issuer dispute, or a market halt that leaves token holders in legal limbo. The $4.63 billion figure proves that millions of retail investors want equity exposure on crypto rails. What it does not prove — yet — is that the tokens they hold carry the same rights, the same recourse, and the same resilience as the shares they track. That proof will come from the next crisis, not the next milestone.

### FAQ
**How big is the tokenized stocks market?** $4.63 billion as of October 28, 2026 (Token Terminal) — up from under $1 billion at the start of 2026, and about $654 million in the week of January 5.
**How does that compare with stablecoins?** Stablecoins stood at the same $4.63 billion level in March 2020 and have since grown to roughly $297 billion — about 64 times larger. The comparison frames the opportunity; it is not a forecast.
**Who dominates the market?** Three issuers hold about 81%: Binance bStocks, Ondo Global Markets and Backed Finance xStocks. BNB Chain holds the largest chain share (30–47% depending on snapshot), ahead of Ethereum and Solana.
**Who is actually buying?** Retail investors: over 4 million holders, with an average individual position of about $780. Most trading happens outside the US and outside market hours.
**What is the weak spot?** Usage: only about 6.8% of tokenized stocks sit in DeFi in one snapshot, and 33 companies recently objected to tokenization on the OKX-ICE venue — issuance is ahead of consent and composability.
