Bitcoin ETFs Just Flipped October Green — While Ether Funds Bled for a Third Straight Day

6 min de lecture

Institutional crypto demand is splitting in two, and the split is now visible in a single day's fund flows. On Wednesday, October 28, US spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $137.3 million — a third straight day of inflows — while US spot Ether ETFs lost $21.4 million, their third straight day of outflows. The Bitcoin buying was enough to flip October's monthly Bitcoin ETF tally back into positive territory at $111 million, with two trading sessions left in the month. The Ether selling pushed October's Ether ETF outflows to $1.32 billion through Tuesday, on track for the largest monthly withdrawal since November 2025. Same market, same week, opposite directions.

### The Bitcoin side: a streak built on one fund
The three-day Bitcoin ETF streak totals about $424 million, according to SoSoValue data reported by Cointelegraph, after $110.3 million on Monday and $176 million on Tuesday (Farside figures put Wednesday at $137.3 million). That streak matters because of what came before it: nearly $774 million left Bitcoin ETFs over the final two trading days of the previous week, including a $635 million single-day outflow on October 22. October's tally was negative through Tuesday; Wednesday's inflow flipped it to +$111 million.

Look closer, though, and the streak is narrower than it appears. Of Wednesday's $137.3 million, BlackRock's IBIT took $136 million and Bitwise's BITB took $1.3 million — the other ten spot Bitcoin funds recorded zero net flows. Total net assets of spot Bitcoin ETFs stood at $104.877 billion as of October 29, about 6.41% of Bitcoin's market capitalization, with $57.607 billion in cumulative net inflows since launch. The story is therefore two stories at once: institutional demand for Bitcoin through ETFs is real and persistent, but right now it is overwhelmingly a BlackRock story. If IBIT pauses, the streak pauses with it.

### The Ether side: four weeks of exits
Ether funds tell the opposite story. Wednesday's $21.4 million outflow was the third straight daily exit, with BlackRock's ETHA losing $44.8 million while Fidelity's FETH (+$18.8 million), a smaller fund (+$1 million) and another Ether product (+$3.6 million) partly offset it. The deeper problem is the trend: Ether ETFs have now seen four consecutive weeks of net withdrawals, and October's $1.32 billion in outflows through Tuesday already makes it the worst month since November 2025. Year-to-date, Bitcoin ETF net inflows stand at roughly $850 million, according to one October 29 tally — a reminder that the year's institutional story has been Bitcoin-first all along, and October only widened the gap.

Solana funds are caught in the same downdraft: spot SOL ETFs lost $24.82 million over just two sessions, coinciding with Solana's dip below $100 before its recovery toward $102. The pattern across all three assets is consistent — when risk appetite fades, institutions defend their Bitcoin allocation first and trim everything else.

### Why the divergence matters for price
Fund flows are not price predictions, but they are the closest thing crypto has to an institutional sentiment gauge, and right now that gauge reads "Bitcoin only." The Crypto Fear & Greed Index climbed to 51 from 48, still in Neutral territory and below the 63 reading of a week earlier — improving sentiment, not enthusiasm. Bitcoin traded around $80,818 at one October 29 snapshot, up 1.6% over 24 hours, roughly tracking the flow recovery. Ether, meanwhile, has lagged Bitcoin all week, with the ETH/BTC ratio touching multi-month lows near 0.029 in one liquidation-day snapshot.

The divergence also reframes the Fed story. Wednesday's inflows arrived on the same day the Fed held rates in a hawkish hold, with Chair Kevin Warsh warning inflation remains above target. Bitget analyst Lewis Huang noted Bitcoin's near-term performance could become more sensitive to Treasury yields, the dollar and broader risk sentiment while the Fed gives limited direction. In that environment, ETF buyers are not betting on a Fed pivot — they are buying Bitcoin despite the absence of one, while selling Ether and Solana until the macro picture clears.

### What to watch from here
Four signals will show whether the divergence holds or closes. First, Thursday's flow data: a fourth straight Bitcoin inflow day would confirm the streak is broadening beyond IBIT, while a return to outflows would show Wednesday merely flipped the monthly arithmetic. Second, whether any non-IBIT Bitcoin fund posts a meaningful inflow — breadth, not just the headline, is the real test. Third, whether Ether outflows slow from the $21.4 million pace or accelerate toward a new monthly record with two sessions left. And fourth, whether Solana's recovery above $100 brings SOL ETF money back or whether its two-session $24.82 million exit continues. October ends Friday; the monthly scoreboard for institutional crypto is about to be final.
