Coinbase reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 29, 2026: net income of $719 million, or $2.51 per diluted share, against analyst expectations of a loss. Revenue fell 35% year over year to $1.22 billion, trading shrank, and nearly the entire profit came from a $715 million gain on crypto assets Coinbase holds as an investment. Strip that out, adjusted net income was just $77.7 million. Two Coinbases: a shrinking trading business and a growing everything-else business, with a paper gain papering over the gap.

NUMBERS

Total revenue $1.216 billion vs $1,220.1 million in Q2 and $1,868.7 million in Q3 2025 (flat sequentially, -35% y/y, near the $1.23B estimate); transaction revenue $590.2 million, -1% vs Q2, -44% y/y, beating $527M estimate; subscription and services $570.2 million, +3% q/q, -20% y/y, beating $561.5M estimate; corporate interest/other $55.1M; adjusted EBITDA $332.9 million, +60% vs Q2's $207.8M, -58% y/y, beating $290.2M estimate, 15th straight positive quarter; operating expenses $1.154 billion, -13% q/q; adjusted expenses $975M below guided $980M-$1,080M; operating income just $61.7 million, down from $480.5 million a year earlier.

TRADING SHRANK

Consumer spot volume -59% y/y, institutional spot -53%; derivatives held up better; market share rose to 10.7% (from 5.6% a year ago), fourth straight quarter of gains — winning a larger slice of a smaller pie; assets on platform $377 billion, 12.5% of total crypto market cap, back to peak; shares closed $160.59, -1.07% on the day, down more than 30% year to date, roughly flat after hours.

GROWTH STORIES

Average USDC held in Coinbase products hit a record $22 billion, +49% y/y, 14th straight quarterly high, ~50% of overall USDC economics over the past year; subscription/services now 49% of net revenue; prediction markets passed $200 million annualised revenue, compounding 82% quarterly since launch; Coinbase One subscribers all-time high; INTX and Deribit integration completed in October (near-term volume volatility warned); cash $8.6 billion; Q4 guide subscription/services $550M-$630M, ~$165M transaction revenue quarter-to-date through October 25 (not to be extrapolated).

INSIDER FOOTNOTE

Reports flagged insider share-sale plans of about $2 billion around the results — fresh supply while the core shrinks; CEO Brian Armstrong: 'We just released our Q3 earnings, and we set product records across the board despite the tough market. And I'm seeing signs that the market is turning.'

ANALYSIS

Never read net income without asking where it came from ($715M of $719M is unrealised gain, reversible); structural shift — trading fees shrink while subscriptions, stablecoin economics and prediction markets grow; rising market share in a shrinking market is bullish competitively but cannot outrun the market forever; watch the Q4 subscription/services guide.
