From seventh to second in a month

Tokenized stocks — shares of listed companies represented as tokens that trade on blockchains — have quietly become one of DeFi's fastest-growing corners, and one protocol has climbed the rankings faster than any other. Pendle, a yield-trading protocol, has become the second-largest decentralized venue for tokenized stocks, holding about 17% of the DeFi market for on-chain equities, according to CryptoBriefing's November 2 report drawing on Token Terminal data. A month earlier it ranked seventh. The climb was measured as of November 2, 2026, after a month of rapid deposit growth into Pendle's tokenized-stock markets. Over the month ending October 31, Pendle's tokenized-stock total value locked rose by $16 million, bringing its total in the category to $33.8 million. Across DeFi protocols, tokenized-stock deposits reached approximately $300 million by late October. That is still small beside traditional equity markets, but the direction is unmistakable: stocks are moving on-chain, and the venues that can offer yield on them are winning the deposits.

How Pendle's design fits tokenized stocks

Pendle's core design is the reason it can play in this market at all. The protocol takes a yield-bearing asset and splits it into two separate tradable pieces: one representing the principal and one representing the future yield. Traders can then buy, sell or hedge each piece separately — locking in a fixed yield, speculating on future yield, or taking leveraged exposure. Applied to tokenized equities, that machinery lets users do things a plain tokenized share cannot: trade the yield on a tokenized stock position, or lever it up. In mid-October 2026, Pendle integrated yield markets for GOOGLc and NVDAc — tokenized versions of Alphabet and Nvidia shares — on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network, each launching with $20,000 USDC in liquidity incentives. Then, on October 22, 2026, Pendle launched PendleLoop, which lets users open leveraged long positions on seven tokenized stocks with a single click, at leverage ratios from 2.6x to 4.2x, running through Aave markets. Pendle has also been adding new yield markets on networks including Base and Robinhood Chain. The competitive field includes Uniswap and Kamino alongside Pendle — but Pendle's jump from seventh to second in roughly a month is the story.

Why tokenized stocks matter beyond one protocol

Step back from Pendle and the bigger picture is institutional plumbing arriving on public blockchains. Tokenized stocks settle on-chain, trade around the clock, and can be composed with lending, yield and derivatives protocols in ways a brokerage account cannot match. That composability is exactly what Pendle exploits: a tokenized share is not just a share, it is a building block. The risks are equally real and should not be waved away. Tokenized equities depend on an issuer and custodian standing behind the token, on the legal claim being enforceable, and on liquidity that can vanish in a stress event — leverage of 2.6x to 4.2x through Aave markets magnifies losses just as it magnifies gains. Regulators are still deciding how these instruments fit securities law in each jurisdiction, and a token that trades 24/7 does not suspend the underlying company's risks. The $300 million category total is a rounding error against global equities — but so was every new market structure at the start. What matters is the mechanism: yield, leverage and composability arriving for stocks on-chain, with real deposits following.

What to watch next

Three things will decide whether this is a durable market or a hot quarter. First, whether deposits keep growing past the $300 million mark or stall once incentives fade — the $20,000 USDC launch incentives for GOOGLc and NVDAc were small, so Pendle's growth was not simply bought. Second, whether more networks and issuers join: Robinhood Chain's presence in Pendle's expansion hints at a distribution channel far larger than crypto-native venues. Third, whether the next stress event — a sharp equity selloff, a custodian problem, a liquidation cascade in leveraged positions

Tokenized stocks are no longer a demo: $300 million in DeFi deposits, a second-place venue at 17% share, and leveraged yield products live on Base say the experiment has graduated to a market.
