🟣 Polygon has proposed a hard fork to recover 70.49 million POL — worth around $6.5 million — stolen in the separate Binance and Polymarket security incidents on Oct 29–30.
The Polygon Improvement Proposal, posted Nov 4 by the Polygon Labs validator support team, would zero out five attacker-controlled addresses (46.63M POL linked to Binance, 23.86M POL to Polymarket) and credit the same amounts to verified recovery wallets. No new tokens would be minted and total supply stays unchanged.
The funds are already frozen — block producers added the addresses to a denylist — but the freeze alone can't return them. The proposal calls the fork an "extreme action" that should not be reproduced commonly. It goes before the Polygon Protocol Governance Call today (Nov 5, 14:30 UTC); if approved, client work and Amoy testnet rehearsal would take about two weeks.
Should a chain ever rewrite balances to return stolen funds? 👇
