Bitcoin fell below $82,000 on Friday, October 23, extending a tech-led selloff that has weighed on risk assets all week. BTC traded near $81,500–$81,800 in early Friday trading after touching a low of $81,074 on Thursday — within about 1% of the closely watched $80,000 level.

ETF flows turned sharply negative

The biggest change in the last 24 hours came from institutional flows. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a combined net outflow of $635.6 million on October 22, one of the largest single-day withdrawals in recent months, according to Farside Investors data. BlackRock's IBIT accounted for roughly $254.1 million of the outflow, Fidelity's FBTC lost $217.5 million, and ARKB saw $109.4 million leave.

The reversal is notable because the same funds had taken in more than $1 billion over the first three sessions of the week. Even after Thursday's withdrawals, the week still shows a net inflow of about $442 million — a sign that institutional demand has turned tactical rather than one-directional, buying dips and trimming into weakness.

Why crypto fell with tech stocks

Bitcoin's slide did not happen in isolation. The Nasdaq Composite lost 2.6% on Thursday, its worst session since June, as investors questioned how the enormous AI building boom will be paid for. Crypto has traded in lockstep with technology shares this year, so when AI names sold off, leveraged crypto positions were cut as well — about $440 million of leveraged positions, mostly longs, were reset over 24 hours.

Ether followed Bitcoin lower, trading near $2,400, while the total crypto market value held around $2.7–2.8 trillion. Market sentiment cooled quickly: the Fear and Greed Index dropped from 68 (Greed) to 50 (Neutral) in a single day.

What traders are watching next

Three things will decide whether this is a healthy correction or the start of something deeper:

  • The $80,000 level. A clean hold keeps the broader uptrend intact; a break opens the door to a deeper pullback.
  • ETF flows. Another day of heavy outflows would confirm institutions are reducing exposure; a return to inflows would signal dip-buying.
  • Next week's central banks. The Federal Reserve meets October 27–28, with a hold priced at about 91.7% by CME FedWatch. The ECB and the Bank of Japan also meet, and oil near $114 a barrel keeps inflation worries alive.

For now, Bitcoin is steadying near $81,700 after the overnight low, up modestly since midnight UTC. But with volatility back, position sizing matters more than predictions.
